Whiplash Trauma and Jaw Pain
|Scientists at Umeå University, Sweden studied short- and long-term TMJ (Temporomandibular joint) pain and dysfunction in 60 patients in hospital emergency room directly after they were involved in a rear-end car collision and evaluated them again one year later.
One in three people who are exposed to whiplash trauma, which induces neck symptoms, is at risk of developing delayed TMJ pain and dysfunction during the year after the accident; the researchers concluded.
The study was published in the Journal of the American Dental Association 2007; 138:1084-1091 and this article was published in the British Dental Journal Volume 203 No.5, 8 September 2007.
